To get to the Fushimi-Inari-Taisha temple, I took the JR train (Nara Line, also known as "D" Line) from Kyoto main station (140 yen). Trains on this line run maybe two per hour. Not more than 10 - 20 minutes later, I was at Inari station where I alighted. The temple was almost right in front of me. If you're near a Keihan station, Gion, for example, taking the Keihan Line to Fushimi Inari is the obvious choice. When you go to Nara from Fushimi Inari, take the Nara Line to Rokujizo (3 stops) then transfer to a much faster Ltd. Express train here.
